British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.
The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of access tunnels leading to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.
There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
IS - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.
RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of a great many British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who endanger our way of life, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."
During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations reports IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
