‘Online Monitoring’: The Consumer Goods Giant Looks to Exploit Vaseline’s Viral TikTok Trend.
First identified over 150 years ago on a Pennsylvania oilfield, the humble pot of Vaseline might not appear as an natural focus for digital platform algorithms.
However, its rise as a popular subject on TikTok has positioned it at the vanguard of an marketing transformation, seeing big businesses spending big on content creators and reducing expenditure on advertising goods in legacy broadcasters.
A Journey from Drilling to Digital
Originally produced in the 1870s by a chemist, Robert Cheeseborough, who saw laborers using on their skin with a derivative of drilling. Now, a flood of content from users have recorded its extensive utilization in “practical tricks”.
Hailed as a remedy for cleaning shoes or extending perfume longevity, and also a remedy for squeaky doors. Its use has even extended to prevent the annoyance of chip seasoning clinging to fingers.
Capitalising on the Conversation
Noticing its viral resurgence, executives at the multinational amplified the hacks by having their research teams evaluate the claims and sharing the findings with influencers.
Assertions that it diminished the sting of chili on the mouth were given the thumbs up. This was also the case for ideas it could lengthen scent duration and restore leather handbags. Suggestions it could brighten smiles or extend lashes were refuted.
The ‘Digital Ear’ Approach
Billboards and TV ads would once have formed the bulk of its promotional efforts. But the Vaseline phenomenon has helped convince executives to dramatically increase investment in content creators.
This monitoring of online platforms to shape commercial tactics has been termed “social listening”. The company's chief executive, recently appointed, has indicated the goal is to spend half of its colossal advertising budget on platform-based material.
Shifting to Modern Engagement
Selina Sykes, who is heading the digital initiative, said the company was simply adapting to new ways of reaching consumers. She said participating on platforms “without spoiling the atmosphere” was essential.
“What is the key to genuine brand integration? This remains our core objective as brands, since the era of community gossip and discussing household products.
“The trend is shifting from a mass communication approach, where we would just broadcast out … Now it’s many conversations, various groups. The evolution of platform algorithms means that these communities feel niche, but they’re not.
“Ensuring your product is discussed by users, recommended by peers, this builds credibility and connection. Creators are critical to that. We are expanding this endorsement system.”
A Seismic Media Shift
The approach indicates profound shifts happening in audience habits, with Gen Z and millennial audiences devoting greater hours to apps like TikTok and Instagram than television, magazines or radio.
This change is evidenced by drops in traditional media advertising. Across Britain, ad revenues for major broadcasters have declined by over six hundred million pounds in inflation-adjusted terms since 2019.
The Creator Economy Boom
Additionally, it points to a merging of functions as large companies almost become production houses themselves, linking up with hundreds of content creators to enhance their items.
A commercial director at a major talent agency said: “Clearly, there is a migration of viewers out of certain traditional media outlets and their time is increasingly on social platforms like Instagram, TikTok and YouTube than they are watching live TV or reading print.
“Many companies report to us consumers have more faith in suggestions from the personalities they subscribe to compared to commercial messages. This is a persistent pattern.”
He added firms may also cut expenditures by targeting content creators over large-scale legacy ad buys, which also enables easier content adjustment to see what works.
The approach is growing. Promotional expenditure on digital creator partnerships is growing fourfold quicker than the media industry overall. In the US, it has over doubled since 2021 and is forecast to attain substantial figures in 2025.
The Enduring Power of Broadcast
Regardless of the massive shift, industry figures said they believed broadcast ads retained significant importance to play, as networks still held the capability to shape the national conversation.
Sykes said: “One of the highest return-on-investment media opportunities is still the Super Bowl. The issue isn't broadcasters claiming: ‘We are no longer pertinent.’ The focus is on who seizes focus … I believe there is absolutely a role for them.”
