New research indicates that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs need to be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
People who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly starving," recalled a patient.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
